Even as some segments show signs of easing, underwriters are still emphasizing discipline—and they’re moving fastest on submissions that are clear, complete, and defensible.
If you want more quotes (and fewer “decline—insufficient info”), your agency needs a repeatable submission standard.
What underwriters want (in plain language)
They want to answer three questions quickly:
- What’s the risk? (operations, exposures, controls)
- How well is it managed? (process, leadership, safety, claims behavior)
- Is the data clean? (consistent, complete, credible)
The “Risk Resume” structure
1) Business snapshot
- What you do (1–2 sentences)
- Revenue + years in business + locations
- Top 3 job types / products / projects
2) Exposures and controls
- Work at height? subs? hot work? pollution? products?
- Safety program: toolbox talks, written SOPs, inspections
- Certificates process and contract controls (if applicable)
3) Claims story
- 5-year loss runs attached
- Top claims explained (cause + corrective action)
4) Requested terms
- Limits, deductibles, desired endorsements
- Prior carrier + why shopping
The “gold standard” attachment list (by line)
GL / Umbrella
- Completed app + narrative
- 5-year loss runs + top claim explanations
- Contracts required? (sample)
- COI/additional insured patterns
Property / BOP
- SOV with year built/updates
